Export Crop

Tobacco is Zimbabwe's most historically significant export crop and a cornerstone of the national economy. Zimbabwe produces some of the world's finest flue-cured Virginia tobacco, prized globally for its bright, golden leaf and mild flavour. The country consistently ranks among the top 5 tobacco producers worldwide. Grown primarily in Mashonaland provinces, tobacco remains a high-value cash crop for both large commercial operations and small-to-medium scale farmers under contract farming arrangements.

pH Range: 5.5 – 6.5

Tobacco is highly sensitive to soil chemistry. It thrives in light, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam soils. Heavy clay soils cause waterlogging and root disease. Avoid soils with excessive nitrogen as this reduces leaf quality. Low chloride content is critical — chloride above 50 ppm severely impairs curing quality.

Fertilizer: Tobacco has a specialised fertiliser programme. Apply base dressing of tobacco-specific compound fertiliser (low Cl) at transplanting. Top-dress with ammonium nitrate at 3 and 6 weeks. Topping (removing the growing tip) at button stage triggers leaf development. Avoid excess nitrogen — it produces dark, heavy leaves with poor burn characteristics.

Rainfall: 700–1000mm/year

Climate Zones

High rainfall

Tobacco requires consistent, moderate moisture especially during early establishment and leaf development stages (weeks 3–8 after transplanting). Over-irrigation dilutes leaf quality. Drip irrigation is preferred for precision and disease management. Avoid irrigation during late leaf maturation to promote proper ripening and quality curing.

Common Pests
Tobacco Aphid (Myzus persicae)
High

Symptoms: Curled, yellowing leaves; sticky honeydew on leaf surfaces; ants present

Management: Spray imidacloprid or pirimicarb. Beneficial insects (ladybirds) are natural predators. Avoid excess nitrogen which attracts aphids.

Cutworm (Agrotis spp.)
High

Symptoms: Young transplants cut at stem base; wilting and death of seedlings overnight

Management: Apply chlorpyrifos granules at planting; hand-collect larvae at night; clear crop residues before planting.

Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca sexta)
Medium

Symptoms: Large green caterpillars consuming entire leaves; defoliation; black droppings on leaves

Management: Hand-pick caterpillars; apply Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or carbaryl sprays.

Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci)
Medium

Symptoms: Yellowing leaves; sooty mould; virus vector

Management: Yellow sticky traps; imidacloprid systemic spray; manage weed hosts around fields.

Common Diseases
Blue Mould (Peronospora tabacina)
High

Symptoms: Yellow spots on upper leaf surface; grey-blue mould on lower surface; rapid spread in cool, wet conditions

Management: Apply metalaxyl preventatively; avoid overhead irrigation; maintain good canopy airflow; use resistant varieties.

Black Root Rot (Thielaviopsis basicola)
High

Symptoms: Black lesions on roots; stunted plants; yellowing; plants lag in growth

Management: Use clean seedbeds; avoid waterlogging; apply thiram/captan seed treatment; rotate out of tobacco for 3+ years.

Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)
Medium

Symptoms: Mottled, distorted leaves; mosaic patterns; stunted plants

Management: Use TMV-resistant varieties; control aphid vectors; remove and destroy infected plants; sanitise tools.

Wildfire (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci)
Medium

Symptoms: Small, water-soaked spots with yellow halos on leaves

Management: Avoid working in wet fields; apply copper-based bactericides; use clean seed; 3-year rotation.
